About

Welcome to www.getyourmelancholyon.com.

Have you ever had your friends or family stop you playing a CD in the car, as they want something a little “happier”?

Have you ever had your workmates stop you playing music out loud, as they’re not sure they can handle “your taste” at the moment?

And yet, have you ever had all your friends ask you on a regular basis what you’re listening to now, and what you recommend?

Well, I have. And so I’ve created GYMO. The purpose of the site is:

My music tastes are, put politely, all over the place. I’m a sucker for alt-country, for GWG (girls or guys with guitars), for singer-songwriters, for shouty, angsty teen rock. I listen to country, rock, pop, emo, dance, opera, classical and world music, and everything in between. And yet, I’m a little bit of a music snob – I do have my indulgences (a love of 80’s music, a small collection of pop gems….), and yet I really detest (generally) music you would think I like. Bands I don’t own albums by include:

So, I love anything with a melody. In most genres. But with a huge number of exceptions. I hope that makes things clear.

Enjoy the site. Leave comments. Leave requests. Make suggestions. And enjoy.

Kyllä, Matthew. Kyllä.

While I think we are in the same (or a similar) boat, I don’t think there is anything wrong with Radiohead. Can you please add T.Rex, Jack Johnson and The Who to the list?
Thanks,
Billy

Personally, I would add most of what Pitchfork recommends. I cannot stand that site. They give random obscure indie albums anything above an 8 and they’re on all the blogs the next day. It doesn’t matter what it is, could be someone banging on pots and pans and yodeling in their front yard.

I enjoy a few Radiohead tunes, Ben Harper’s Live album is pretty darn fun and The Smashing Pumpkins & Oasis got me through middle school. But other than that, we’re on the same page!

How painfully true….

“You’ve built a grassroots following on MySpace of 5 people? You’ve created your own album including a track featuring cats meowing for 15 minutes? You get an 8!”

“You’ve had a painfully derivative song strike it lucky by featuring on a television ad? You have an album of near-identical songs? You get an 8!”

“You’re a talented singer/band with an album of tracks influenced by various genres? You have a strong following, and enjoy making music for the sake of it? No cats? No television ad music? Uhm…here’s a 3….”

“Your music is very… mellow.”

I hear that way too much.

Wow. Great site. I just stumbled on it today. I run a site with a similar view. Mine is more of a catalog of melancholy music. Your has lots more personal insight. I don’t yet have a links page, but I will try to find a way to put a link to you because I really like the blog.

If you like Van Morrison you should check out Glen Hansard. He if amazing. I love all of his work from solo to The Frames and even The Swell Season. He is so passionate with whatever he is singing.

By the by…Great site. You have opened to a few new artists.

The above link is such a hauntingly beautiful song I was surprised I hadn’t heard of it until I watched the episode of Dollhouse it was in.
