Life. It’s a son of a bitch at times.

Despite some friends protestations to the contrary, I don’t think I’ll ever post exactly how I feel, or how my life is going on this blog. But I will happily hint at it, which you might have noticed from the last couple of posts.

And today, a friend of mine exposed me to Bon Iver’s cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, combined with a little of her “Nick Of Time” – the entirety of the first song, a few lines of the second – which broke me.

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” has always been one of the most affecting songs I’ve ever heard – a testament to melancholy if ever one existed. And combined with Justin Vernon’s voice? “Overwhelming” just can’t do the impact justice.

For now, replace “because you don’t/won’t” with “you do, but…”, and replace “you” with “me”, and “me” with “you”. And ignore the last few lines of the song.

Life. I found out this week that the curse “May you live in interesting times” isn’t in fact Chinese. But I found out the last few months that it still rings true.

Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices
Inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close
Don’t patronise
Don’t patronise me

I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel
Something it wont
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And I feel the power if you don’t
No you don’t
Cause I can’t make you love me
If you don’t

I’ll close my eyes
Then I wont see
The love you don’t feel
When your holding me
Morning will come
And I’ll do whats right
Just give me till then
To give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel
Something it wont
Here in the dark,in these final hours
I will lay down my heart
And feel the power if you won’t
No you won’t
Cause I can’t make you love me
If you don’t

If you don’t
No you, no you won’t

I found love, darling
I found love, darling
I found love, darling
I found love, darling, yeah
I found love, darling, darling
Love in the nick of time

I found love, darling, yeah
Love in the nick of time

Apparently it is, when it comes to Jónsi. I’ve posted about his unfailingly happy music before, and he’s only gone and done it again.

Nearly every single Jónsi song embeds itself in my head – the pounding, swelling, heart-wrenching, utter sheer joyousness of the thing growing, unfolding, and shining a torch into every darker, melancholic corner of my mind – and “Sticks & Stones” is pure Jónsi.

Let the change from 2:01 to 2:08, from 2:50 onwards, and the drums at 3:11 propel you out of your seat, bouncing around your room in a whirling dervish of joy and happiness.

Normal melancholy will be resumed shortly. For now, go dance.

Eyes open wide, blinded by the sun now
Orange and white, dark red, green and yellow
Rainbow colors! Do not hide, see the view!
Step aside, go through!

Against the light, too strong, blow a fuse now
Everything bright, new songs, burning shoes
The look in your eyes! Break our bones into half!
Scream and shout and do laugh!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Inn um ermar, upp hryggjarsúluna
Yfir skóg, flæðir niður brekkuna
Allt upp í loft! Ég mun aldrei gleyma!
Því ég mun aldrei!

Hleypur um, rífur, leysir flækjurnar
(Upp með rótum) með blik í augum!
Stórmerki, undur, brjótum bein í sundur!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Right beyond the trees
Show you how you’ll be

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : You’re right beyond trees
Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : Burst through the seams

Open your eyes and see
You see – You see
